B&Q Swindon

In a previous role, Paul Clark worked with Swindon Borough Council on the design, planning and construction of this B&Q warehouse and garden centre.

Twice the size of Wembley Stadium at 13,935m2 this super-sized development, situated on the site of the council’s highways depot, required the diversion of major infrastructure services and the decontamination of much of the area.

As an out of town development the project had to be referred to the office of deputy prime minister under planning law, despite securing consent without objection from the local authority. However, the subsequent inquiry supported the application and consent was finally granted.

This scheme was one of the last B&Q warehouse units built in the UK and unlike other units has not subsequently been subdivided. The scheme was completed on programme and to budget.
